It is time to mark your calender for the SCV Sesquicentennial Event to be held in Montgomery, AL on Saturday February 19, 2011. This event will feature a parade up Dexter Avenue to the Alabama State Capitol Building, a reenactment of the swearing in of President Jefferson Davis and a selection of speakers at the Capitol Building. Just like was done for the Flag Rally in 2000 in Columbia, South Carolina and for the Hunley Funeral in Charleston in 2004 - it is IMPERATIVE that this event be well attended. We must show the world that we will not permit the History and Heritage of the Confederacy to be forgotten and unobserved during the Sesquicentennial.
It is up to us to see that this history is remembered and portrayed in the right way so start planning your vist to Montgomery - organize vans and buses - so we can show the world we remember our Confederate Heroes.

Embassy Suites - downtown Montgomery, AL. The SCV has a block of rooms reserved for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Single and doubles $116.00 per night, triple $126.00, and quads for $136.00 per night. The SCV reservation code will be availabe and posted early next week. (Note: If you end up staying at a different hotel, The Renaissance has shown itself to Confederate non-friendly)
 
Vendors : Friday, February 18th, 2011 and Saturday the 19th vendors will be setup in the hotel.
 
Reception: Friday evening the Alabma Division will have a meet and greet with entertainment from 7pm to 9pm at the host hotel.

Confederate Parade on Dexter Avenue - 12 Noon - details to be announced shortly. Cannons are also need for a firing of a salute on the grounds of the State Capitol.  

Swearing in of President Jefferson Davis will take place after the parade on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol Building. 

Re-enactment of the raising of the first Confederate Flag
 
Saturday evening a banquet will be held with a guest speaker. Cost: $75.00 per couple or $50.00 for an individual.

National Gun Rights Champion Larry Pratt to Address the Third Southern National Congress
 
Floyd, Virginia – Thomas Moore, Chairman of the Southern National Congress, announced today that Mr. Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Own ers of America, will be the keynote speaker at the Third Southern National Congress (SNC), which will convene November 12-14, 2010, at Montgomery Bell State Park near Dickson, Tennessee. His address to the SNC Delegates will be “America in Crisis: a Southern Solution.” He will focus the traditional Southern principles of state sovereignty, nullification, and interposition as the only practical and peaceful solution to Federal encroachments on our liberties.
 
Thomas Moore said, “We’re deeply honored to have Larry Pratt as our keynote speaker at the Third Congress. He has made Gun Owners of America into the most effective and steadfast protector of the Second Amendment rights of Americans, which is the one right that guarantees all the others. The First Congress, the “Seed Corn Congress,” met in North Carolina in December 2008 with 100 Delegates. T he Second Congress, the “Congress of the Covenant,” met in Alabama in September 2009 with 150 Delegates.

The General Organization of the SCV will be holding a nation heritage Rally each year of the Sesquicentennial of the War for Southern Independence. Below are the locations for each year

2010 - Charleston, SC- December 2010
 
The Confederate Heritage Trust, in partnership with the South Carolina Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, is currently in the planning stages for what will be a grand and memorable Secession play and Ball. This event will commemorate and celebrate the state of South Carolina for the second time becoming an independent nation on December 20th 1860. The evening will begin with a theatrical play recreating the Convention and the men that cast their votes to remove South Carolina from the union know as These United States. Many of the actors will be local and State celebrities and personalities.
 
Immediately following the play a grand ball and reception will follow with a joyous night of music, dancing, food and drink. The Charleston Gaillard auditorium will be our venue for both events. As an added bonus The State Archives and History Department will have the original Ordinance of Secession available for all to see and enjoy.
 
The Confederate Heritage Trust and the South Carolina Division would like to personally invite you to attend this once in a lifetime event! Rebels Without a Cause?

260,000 Southern fighting men fell in that war, along with nearly 50,000 Southern civilians. Until recently, their struggle, albeit a losing one, was admired world-wide …. 
 
“The Southerners have shown every characteristic that can mark an independent people. They have made the costliest sacrifices that men can make to assure their freedom from foreign rule, and they have fought for it with a gallantry that has not been surpassed in all the wars of liberation the world has seen….” (“The Quarterly Review,” “The Confederate Struggle,” London, July – October, 1862, vol. 112, pp. 535 – 564) 
 
Go to Amazon.com, type in “U.S. Civil War,” scan the thousands of book titles and you will be hard pressed to find anyone holding an opinion like the Quarterly Review’s. Among the more contemporary ones are books which maintain that the planters led the South into war but they let the poor man do the fighting, that the women of the South complained bitterly of the war and urged their men to desert, that the Confederate soldier was a frequent deserter and that he often times donned blue to fight for the Union, and that the South’s population did not have its heart in the fight. The author of one such book even claimed that Southern women were against the war because they were tired of being “second class citizens.” [20] 
 
There is even a book on “The Free State of Jones,” a county in Mississippi which allegedly revolted against the Confederate government, and which was the subject of a very old movie called “Tap Roots.” As I said in the beginning of this paper, if they keep increasing the number of Southerners who fought for the Union, there will be no Southerners left to fight for the Confederacy, and eventually people will begin to wonder who it was that put those 360,000 Yankees into the “Southern dust?” 
 
Yes, the Confederate army was plagued by desertions late in the war. Of course, late in the war there was this fellow named Sherman, whose army was pillaging its way through Georgia and South Carolina virtually unopposed, targeting civilians as it went. What would you do if you were a Georgian, or a South Carolinian soldier in front of Petersburg and you knew that your family was in the path of these thugs? Tough call, isn’t it?! 
 
Desertions plagued both sides actually. No one wants to come home maimed, or worse, in a body bag and sometimes men simply decided that they had had enough and could take no more. It does appear however, desertions aside, that there were more than enough Confederates left to shoot down hordes of Yankees – a cursory look at the casualty figures late in the war would be enough to tell you that! 
 
And while it has become all the rage among wack-ademics these days to “prove” that it was the South and the (allegedly) shabby cause for which it was fighting that caused its downfall and not overwhelming size and power of the Union army, one cannot escape the fact that the North had 4 times the South’s manpower and 10 times its industrial capacity. No, you can’t escape it no matter how many theses you write about how flawed the South was. You can’t escape it because even the South’s opponents noticed it themselves and spoke openly about it. 
 
Union General Samuel Howe, in February 1862 made the following observations: “Look at the opposing armies and you will see two striking truths. First, the Northern men are superior in numbers, virtue, intelligence, bodily strength, and real pluck; and yet on the whole they have been outgeneraled and badly beaten. Second, the Northern army is better equipped, better clad, fed and lodged; and is in a far more comfortable condition, not only than the Southern army, but any other in the world; and yet, if the pay were stopped in both, the Northern army would probably mutiny at once, or crumble rapidly; while the Southern army would probably hold together for a long time, in some shape, if their cause seemed to demand it. The animating spirit of the Southern soldier is rather moral than pecuniary; of the Northern soldier it is rather pecuniary than moral.” [21]  
 
Yes, Howe was a Union general. But respect for one’s enemy was not at all unheard of in those days. In a Memorial Day, 1884 speech, Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., himself a union veteran said, “We believed that it was most desirable that the North should win…But we equally believed that those who stood against us held just as sacred convictions that were the opposite of ours, and we respected them as every man must respect those who give all for their belief…” [22] 
 
Visiting British Colonel Arthur Freemantle, in his 1863 tour of the Southern states, might take issue with the contentions of our mythologists. After seeing first hand the determination of both the Southern soldier and civilian he remarked, “but the more I think of all that I have seen in the Confederate States, of the devotion of the whole population, the more I feel inclined to say with General Polk – “How can you subjugate a people such as this?”” [23] 
 
Southern women brought down the war effort because they were sore about being second class citizens? The bimbo who wrote this either doesn’t get out much or she’s never met a Southern woman. She also ignores the fact that the women of the north faced the same kind of “second class citizenship.” Colonel Arthur Freemantle, who, unlike the author, actually visited the South during the war, had this to say about Southern women…. 
 
“…no Confederate soldier is given his discharge from the army, however badly he may be wounded; but he is employed at such labor in the public service as he may be capable of performing, and his place in the ranks is taken by a sound man hitherto exempted. The slightly wounded are cured as quickly as possible, and are sent back at once to their regiments. THEIR WOMEN TAKE CARE OF THIS…..” [24] 
 
Indeed, the attitudes of the Southern women that I know mirror that of the woman whose fiancé declined on volunteering for the army. She sent him a package of women’s underwear with a note which read, “Wear these or volunteer!” Needless to say, he volunteered. [25] 
 
And as far as the planters and the old “rich man’s war, poor man’s fight” hooey is concerned, it is common knowledge that the ranks of the South’s aristocracy provided, for the most part, the bulk of the leadership in the Confederate army, and that most of the time these men led from the front. It was the planters who had the most to lose in the South’s bid for freedom and lose they did. They lost their fortunes, they lost their way of life, and oftentimes, they lost life itself. Their words have indeed been recorded and they are in the history books if you’re not too lazy to look for them: 
 
After leading a charge at Gettysburg and falling at the head of his troops, mortally wounded General William Barksdale, a wealthy planter by the way, asked his Yankee captors to give his wife a message as he lay dying - “Tell my wife I am shot, but we fought like hell!” [26] 
 
17 year old David O. Dodd, a rich man’s son, was executed for being a spy by Union troops on  January 8, 1864, and was eulogized by one of his captors - “His quiet and heroic bearing stamped him as not only one of the bravest of the brave, but not one of us doubted that he met his fate with the same lofty feeling of patriotism that sustained, in his last hours, Nathan Hale, the immortal spy of the Revolution.” [27] 
 
Colonel William Peleg Rogers of the 2nd Texas Infantry, a planter’ son, who fell at the battle at Battery Robinette, Corinth Miss., 1862, was eulogized by none other than Union General Rosecrans - “He was one of the bravest men that ever led a charge. Bury him with military honors and mark his grave so his friends can claim him. The time will come when there will be a monument here to commemorate his bravery.” [28] (I wonder how General Rosecrans might respond to the current craze of tearing down Confederate monuments?) 
 
Private Charlie Jackson, a young teenager, barely 16 and a rich man’s son killed, April, 1862,
 
His dying words to his father - “…Father, tell the boys when you get back how I died – just as a soldier ought to! Tell them to fight the Yankees as long as there is one left in the country, and never give up! Whenever you fill up the company with new men, let them know that besides their country there’s a little boy in heaven who will watch them and pray for them as they go into battle!” [29] 
 
I could go on and on in this vein. I could also ask why it is that our myth busters seem to focus heavily on Southern discontent but ignore the same, if not greater discontent that existed in the North. In November 1864, with the war going heavily in the North’s favor, 1.8 million out of 4 million northern voters were courageous enough to go to the polls and vote against Lincoln. I say “courageous” because in those days you did not go into a booth, close the curtain and vote in secret. You marked a ballot in front of everyone. Everyone knew how you voted, including the Union government which had, to that point, imprisoned thousands of its own citizens for speaking out against the war. Any perceived opposition to the war or to the government and its policies could easily earn you a trip to jail (minus any writ of habeas corpus) or an unpleasant home visit from “The Loyal League.”  Where are our myth busters on the subject of Northern discontent I wonder? And why is it that all the myths busted are Southern ones? 
 
There was a time when historians were less partisan than they are now and I’m old enough to remember such times. One particular historian, very well respected in his day was Bruce Catton, certainly no Lost Cause apologist by any stretch of the imagination. I’ll close this section with his words on the subject of the Confederate soldier: 
 
“There is no legend quite like that of the Confederate fighting man.  He reached the end of his haunted road long ago. He fought for a star-crossed cause and in the end he was beaten, but as he carried his slashed red battle flag into the dusty twilight of the Lost Cause, he walked straight into a legend that will last as long as the American people care to remember anything about the American past.” Bruce Catton

Please note the date of this communiqué (below & herein)- 14 AUGUST 2009- 2009.  It was sent to me by the Confederate Society of America's Florida representative- Chris Case.

PLEASE read it and learn more of that History that the Federal's have Denied & Hidden from YOU.

Perhaps the day is finally arriving wherein MANY will come to their senses and realize why they, theirs and this country, is in the most dangerous dilemma it has ever been in?  It has been taken from YOU by the very Federal Government that YOU have blindly given YOUR allegiance to.

As I have stated for sometime, THEIR (Federals) subterfuge officially began after April, 1865 when the then only hope for the perpetuation of a Constitutional Republic was defeated- The Confederate States of America.  Since then, the Federal's have have re-invented themselves and re-cast this country in THEIR image using THEIR ideology, the public treasury & social entitlement to create the foundation for the lofty mantle they now sit upon.

They 'Reconstructed' this entire country, beginning with the South, and continuously "Transforming" it ever since into the Socialist Democracy it has become today.

Anyone believing or hoping that the current two-party system (Republic rats) can or will 'Return' us to a Constitutional Republic is living a pipe dream.

As EVIDENCED below, it's OVER, and has been OVER, sadly, for sometime.

But it is NOT too late.

The Constitutional Republic of the South and her former Confederate Government were NEVER surrendered by the then sitting government.  Therein lies our ONLY hope for a return to that which we once were and so desperately seek again.

Despite the Federal subterfuge of these last 145 years since they invaded and over-ran us, and despite the many intentional and convoluted Laws they have passed whose design was to shield and hide them from their illegal atrocities waged upon us, our former Colonial & Constitutional Laws STILL EXIST.

Thus, we CAN and MUST, RE-SEAT the Legal Government of the South through that remaining Legal doorway STILL available to us- its called RESTORATION & NOT ESTABLISHMENT.  Federal Might does NOT & WILL never make RIGHT that which was ILLEGAL of long ago.  EACH of YOU MUST know this and understand what CAN & MUST be undertaken if YOU really what YOUR country back!

And this is NOT a pipe dream as the Federal's would have YOU believe.  Hell, most of them don't have a clue as to what in the hell is going on much less understand their Constitution.  How can they when they don't even write the legislation much less read it.

They would have YOU believe that what I speak of is unattainable & totally impossible.  I, like those MANY Confederates THROUGHOUT THIS COUNTRY, with whom I am PROUD to be associated with,  understand full well what I am talking about.  And just like those same Confederates of long ago who fought the Zealot Invader in PROTECTION of THEIR Sovereign Country's & Legal Government, know this is entirely DOABLE!

You have been hustled folk's, clear and simple.  Your plight is the net result of 145 years of Federal skullduggery that has morphed into the Beast who now resides in Washington.  It has been many years in the making and tonite, their chief overseer, Barack Hussein Obama, will try to snow YOU yet again with more 'Good News' regarding Iraq......the same guy who along with his co-conspirator, Joe Biden, once tried to suspend support for the troops and told Y'all that the War was NOT winnable.

It will continue this way until Y'all decide to STOP it and SEPARATE from them!

It's just more of the same old from the same old group.  IT WILL NEVER GET ANY BETTER NOR WILL IT EVER CHANGE.

If YOU want YOUR country back, then YOU will have to realize that which we Confederates saw coming long before 1860 when our first State seceded- WE MUST SEPARATE & RESTORE that which was ILLEGALLY TAKE FROM US IF Y'ALL want the American Way to survive & continue.

Barack Hussein Obama just got Elena Kagan appointed to the Supreme Court.  She is nothing more than a Harvard Law Professor who has NEVER tried a single case.  She will now sit on the highest court in the land.

WILL SHE APPLY CONSTITUTIONAL LAW OR WILL SHE BE JUST ANOTHER FEDERAL STOOGE THAT ENFORCES THEIR LAWS?

Here's what she had to say not long ago BEFORE her appointment:

" We must use law to silence 'hate speech' ."  - A sad commentary on the First Amendment.

" We live in a society marred by racial & gender inequality (the lesbian tilt- shake hands with Barney Frank)); certain reforms of speech perpetuate & promote in-equality. The disappearance of such speech would be cause for GREAT elation." - By whom, her lesbian friends? She also supports indefinite detention without trial. Hmmmm, guess there is something to those FEMA camps after all.....and there GOES HABEAS CORPUS, AN AMERICAN RIGHT SINCE 1798 RIGHT DOWN THE TOILET!

" Our Law is the foundation of our DEMOCRACY." - She doesn't even know that America is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC!

Kagan will NOT support the Constitution; she has an agenda that will be demonstrated in judicial activism as expressed in the concept of a "living Constitution" & open to the whims & interpretation of ANY Supreme Court Justice.  THANK YOU BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA!!!!!!

There are many parallels between Obama and her.

> Obama's mother was a practicing atheist & both of her parents were practicing Communists. ( and remember the church in who Barack attended for more than 20 years- Jeremiah Wright's- a practicing Black racist. I suggest you read his book's- Dreams of My Father & Audacity of Hope and perhaps y'all will come to see the light )

> Like Obama, she has NEVER practiced Law but will NOW become YOUR ultimate judge.  Still think we Confederates are crazy?

Maybe she will emulate & follow the practices of her namesake, Lazar Kaganovich- Stalin's deputy in charge of the Ukrainian Holocaust that murdered over 3 MILLION Christian Ukrainians; or her legal mentor, Thurgood Marshall, who she clerked for and probably the worst person ever appointed to the Supreme Court.

Y'all keep on believing that these Federal's have YOUR best interests in mind.....and after YOU read below that which once was, perhaps you will understand what General Robert E. Lee meant when he refused the Union Command and said: " I will NOT raise my sword against my beloved country.' - (meaning Virginia, his Sovereign)

Better make up your minds because there is NOT much time remaining folks.

A "citizen" is one who gives their allegiance to a particular body  politic in return for protection.

The U.S. Supreme Court has been pretty consistent in stating that the United States is not obligated to protect a "citizen".  Not only that, but the United States has been conducting biological experiments on Americans

Also the so-called 14th. Amendment was never ratified, it was rejected  by 17 states for being
blatantly unconstitutional, but was forced upon America at the barrel  of a gun.  The Marxist
so-called 14th. Amendment nationalizes "citizenship" and creates the fiction called; U.S. citizen/

The United States of America is NOT a country, but a FEDERATION OF COUNTRIES of which Florida
is one. The definition of the word state, is COUNTRY, the state you  were born in IS YOUR COUNTRY.

The once voluntary association of these American Republics was known  as the united states of America,
or the states united of America.

The so-called "civil" war was NOT a "civil" war, but an INTERNATIONAL WAR, between different countries,
of which Lincoln had NO AUTHORITY to invade or occupy.

A "civil" war is one fought within the borders of a particular state/ country by it's own nationals.

The states were forced to give up their sovereignty when they were  forced to adopt the so-called 14th. Amendment.  The whole political "system" that Americans suffer under today is  based entirely on this so-called "Amendment".

Lincoln stated; " I have destroyed the Republic to save the union"   these "united" states are not a voluntary association as they were before the so-called "civil" war, but a coercive  subjugation by the corporation called the UNITED STATES which is controlled by the FEDERAL RESERVE which is controlled by the INTERNATIONAL BANKSTERS who are of the tribe of the TALMUD, who used to be known as the PHARISEES.

These are NOT the ancient Israelites of the tribe of Judea, or the ancient religion of YAHWEH, but the cult of the pagan Babylonian book known as the TALMUD.

Oddly enough, there's a new organization called Republican Majority Coalition that's showing signs of an IQ above 80, but I think the name must be purely strategic.

Truly the two-party duopoly is a curse from hell. And the fact that John McCain got the Stupid Party nomination in AZ again over a true patriot shows, I fear, that ameriKa will never grow beyond that mental complex.

Forgive my fatefulness, dear people, but if the patient won't take its medicine, it will never get well.

One school in South Carolina enrolls students in JROTC and you put a Hitler Youth poster in front of your article?  You call the school program the work of Confederate Fascists?  The Confederacy is no longer in existence thanks to Obergrupenfuhrer Wilhelm Sherman and his Yankee Waffen SS who murdered, raped, burned, and robbed their way across South Carolina during the War of Northern Aggression.

If it's fascism you are concerned about, take a good look at the current leadership of this country.  They are far more of a threat to your liberty than a bunch of school kids.  I was led to believe that the Sun News was a libertarian publication.  There is a big difference between a libertarian and a drooling idiot liberal.

I. “The Myth of the Myth of the Lost Cause”

It has always been my intent to write a paper refuting the contentions of people who claim that the “Lost Cause” was some kind of elaborate myth. A group of facebook posts which a friend recently pointed out to me and which were written by such people was, I think, the spark I needed to finally tackle this project.

The following paper, which I've entitled "The Myth of the Myth of the Lost Cause," is an attempt to address some of the contentions of “those people” in detail and to hopefully provide some useful points of information for those of us who still think that there is more truth than myth in the "Lost Cause." I have tied together some points that
I’ve made in other papers and added some new ones and I have included references and footnotes. As the paper itself is so long, I have divided it into 6 installments, the first of which appears below. The remaining
installments will appear one at a time in the upcoming issues of Southern Heritage News and Views.

I. “The Myth of the Myth of the Lost Cause”

Myth? What Myth?

If you like “Civil War” history but haven’t been paying attention these last 20 years or so, the “Lost Cause”, has now become a “Myth” – at least according to most contemporary historians and self-proclaimed experts. Ever since Alan Nolan’s 1991 book, “The Myth of the Lost Cause” the historical literary field has witnessed an avalanche of similar books, each desperately trying to be unique in its own way, and each seeking to prove that the cause for which the South claimed to have fought and indeed, the heroic struggle itself that most people, until the last 20 years, believed that the South put up, are nothing more than myths.

Wikipedia, not known to be the best and most reliable of sources, nonetheless defines accurately what I am getting at and what is the target of this paper:

“The Lost Cause is the name commonly given to a literary and intellectual movement that sought to reconcile the traditional white society of the Southern United States to the defeat of the Confederate States of America in the Civil War of 1861–1865.[1] Those who contributed to the movement tended to portray the Confederacy's cause as noble and most of the Confederacy's leaders as exemplars of old-fashioned chivalry, defeated by the Union armies not through superior military skill, but by overwhelming force. They also tended to condemn Reconstruction.”

So then, the “Lost Cause” has become a myth – so sayeth the “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologists.” Why do I refer to them as such? Because in destroying one myth or what they claim is a myth they haven’t done much more than replace it with another myth, and a particularly bad myth at that!

A more detailed look at what the “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologists” contend:

- They contend that: Slavery was the real cause of the war. The South fought for the right to keep others in bondage and anything else is a lie or distortion perpetrated in the post war period by former Confederates who were ashamed of their actions and who were trying to make themselves look good, or, by neo-Confederates today seeking to whitewash the Confederate cause and who themselves are most probably racists.

-They contend that: After the war Southern writers wrote the history of the war and brainwashed Americans, north and south into believing that the South really fought for states rights and not slavery, and that it lost its heroic fight only because it was overwhelmed by superior numbers.

-They contend that: After the war, Southern writers convinced America that before the Yankee attack everything was moonlight and magnolias in the South and that all the slaves were happy.

-They contend that: Southern generals weren’t really as good or as noble as everyone says they were. This myth was invented by Southern writers to steal the glory from Yankee generals, who, led by Massa Linkhorn and
company, gave us “a new nation,” for which we should all be eternally thankful. (even though the cost of creating that “new nation” was nearly 700000 dead and nearly  half a million maimed),

- Most mythologists contend that the Southern soldier was one or more of the following: overrated, ignorant, misled, apathetic, a frequent deserter, a poor soldier, and that his heart was not really in the fight. If he did, at times, show enthusiasm for his cause, it was only because he hoped one day to hit the lottery and be able to afford to buy a gaggle of slaves – thus, even if he did not own slaves, he was fighting for the hope that one day he would.

-They contend that: 50000 Southerners fought bravely for the North…err, well, they used to say 50000 but a few years ago they upped the figure to 100,000, and more recently, that figure has climbed to 300,000. (soon
the numbers will reach a point where it will appear that there were more Southerners in the Union army than there were males in the entire South.)

-They contend that: Southern writers wrote out the black man’s participation in the war on the Union side in order to promote “white supremacy.” To correct this injustice, “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologists” now inform us that the black man was actually instrumental in winning the war for the Union, that slaves ran away in vast hordes to
the Union lines, that “the slaves freed themselves”, and that those who could not make it to the Union lines worked feverishly to subvert the Southern war effort. (There is no mention of any black participation on
the Southern side as “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologists” do not believe in such things any more than they believe in little green men.  Well, actually, a lot of them do believe in little green men but not in black men supporting the South.)

-They contend that: The Planters, who were slave owners and werry werry bad men, dragged the rest of the South into seceding and into a war that it really did not want. This resulted in a lack of enthusiasm for the
war that was reflected in the attitude of the Southern civilian population, whose women begged their men to desert and who frequently rioted because they were sick of the war and sick of not having any food.

-They contend that: Reconstruction was a wonderful time of social progress and of wonderful “interracial democracies,” snuffed out by those evil Southern white supremacists and that Reconstruction was a
great idea, but it did not go far enough. (stick the word “interracial in front of anything these days and it is automatically a good thing. I wonder if an “interracial” case of cholera is a good thing?).

But it’s all ok now, because the “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologists” are going to make it all better and fix America’s collective memory.  Like the Union army before them, they will go “trampling through the vintage” to stomp out the “grapes of wrath.” The Republican-led Union army gave America a new nation, whether America wanted it or not, and the “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologist” will give America a new “memory” - whether it wants it or not.

Glory, Glory Halleluiah.

About those Post War Southern Writers

There was no subversive plot on the part of Southern post-war writers to steal America’s historical “memory.” In 1865 the South recognized that its bid for independence had failed. It laid down its arms, and its citizens agreed to return to the Union and be good citizens of that political entity. They and their descendents have been faithful to their word, as evidenced by the fact that ever since 1865, whenever America has needed volunteers to go off and get killed in some far off hellhole, it is always Southerners who are the first to volunteer. Ann Coulter
referred to them as “America’s Warrior Class.”

Nowhere in the terms of surrender however, did it specify that Southerners had to grovel and to humbly beg for forgiveness. Nowhere did it say that they had to admit to wrongdoing and then accept slander or insults. Nowhere was it written that they could not defend themselves.  Self-defense, whether against physical or verbal attack, was and still is everyone’s right. In the post war period Northern writers took it upon themselves to cast the South as the proverbial villain in some kind of demented passion play. Southern writers responded and that’s all there is to it. And if they wrote better and presented a better argument than their northern counterparts, well, maybe, just maybe, it’s possible that they indeed had the better argument, and that in a day and age that
had yet to see mass brainwashing in either the public schools or the national parks or, had yet to encounter the most nauseating of popular terms, “the teachable moment,” maybe, just maybe, an American public that was still able to think independently, logically and critically, actually bought those arguments - because those arguments actually had something to offer!

About Slavery as some kind of sin or high crime

Yes, the South had slavery. So what? It was in America for 240 years before Sumter was fired upon, it had been practiced worldwide since the dawn of recorded history by nearly every people on the planet, it was legal and protected by the Constitution, and the Yankees had no problem with it until they stopped making a profit from it and, until they began a determined campaign to secure a majority in Congress in order to be able to pass legislation favorable to their states – legislation I might add that also happened to be detrimental to the Southern states.  Further, I don’t see anyone making demands for apologies or expressions of regret on other countries that have practiced slavery. The only one I see getting hit with demands is America, specifically white America and specifically the American South. And I do not see those today who whine about slavery of the past doing anything about it where it exists in the present (in Africa, and in a manner far more brutal than any 19th
century white planter could have conceived of). I can’t say exactly what the reason for this might be except to postulate, as someone else did, that slavery of the past is remunerable for reparations in the present,
while slavery of the present is not.

Whatever the reasons, I will not jump on the insanity bandwagon and start apologizing on behalf of past peoples for doing what was common and quite the norm in their time. As I’ve said before, more and more I grow convinced that for the past 20 or 30 years, someone has been putting “stupid pills” in America’s water supply. When I majored in history as an undergraduate 40 years ago, such moralizing, sermonizing, and apologizing were not to be found, and judging past peoples by using contemporary standards was considered to be the province of the fool. A student majoring in history who displayed such behavior would have been told by his professors to find another major. Today, the professors do it!

Newsflash – those who demand such apologies and expressions of regret are the demagogues, the race baiters and those who have something to gain by issuing such demands. Those who comply with such demands are the cowards, the fools, the idiots, those who are afflicted with self-loathing and those who have something to gain by demonstrating abasement. I refuse to play in this game. Charley Reese, former
journalist for the Orlando Sentinel, once said that “the people of the past don’t owe anyone an apology. They, like us, fell out of the womb into a society that, like all societies, had pre-existing customs and mores. They played the cards that God dealt them the best way they knew how and that’s all that you can expect of them. It’s our play now, and the pot is the future.” I stand with Mr. Reese on this one. And I will not budge for anyone. I don’t do apologies, I don’t do sorry, I don’t do “reconciliation” (another word that has been battered to death in recent
times), and I don’t do “stupid pills” either.

About Slavery as the “Cause” of the War

The war itself was not caused by slavery. The war was caused by the invasion of 11 states who sought the same right as their forefathers sought – the right to be governed by something which had the consent of
those that it governed. Those states, not counting 2 others, Maryland and Missouri, who were prevented by military force from even discussing secession, had determined that they were not safe in the Union and
therefore had decided to pursue their own course independent of their northern neighbors. Those northern neighbors, governed as they were by a relatively new political party bent on consolidation of the American
system, could not find it in their hearts to part with those states, and so, launched an invasion of them. That’s your cause of the war in a nutshell.

I would say that the South had plenty of reason not to feel safe. Some Northern idealists had cheered 30 years earlier when Nat Turner mutilated and murdered 61 white men, women and children. Even greater numbers of sanctimonious reformers proclaimed John Brown, whose plans, if successful, would have made Turner’s exploits look like a church picnic, to be a saint. Brown’s expedition was financed by 6 well-heeled and wealthy northerners, all belonging to a party that, in the words of one prominent Republican, Wendell Phillips, was a “party of the North pledged against the South.” [1]

If anyone wanted war, it wasn’t the South. “All we ask is to be left alone.” It was a cry echoed by numerous Southerners throughout Dixie between 1861 and 1865, from the highest official and general, to the lowest private and civilian. It was heard coming from the mouths of Jefferson Davis, Alexander Stephens, Patrick Cleburne, Mary Chestnut, Judah Benjamin and countless others. Had the North left the south alone
to go its own way, there would have been no war, no nearly 700000 dead and no nearly half a million maimed.

To you “Myth of the Lost Cause Mythologists”, I say flat out – if you want to know what the cause of the war was, look into the mirror and you’ll see it staring back at you. It was caused by the invasion of sovereign states by a bunch of boobs like you who just couldn’t leave well enough alone. The desperate fight that the South put up was a noble one and a courageous one, and until recently that fact was acknowledged by anyone with a modicum of common sense and a passing amount of literacy. And though it failed, I have no doubt that those who conducted the defense against that invasion would say that despite its failure, it was well worth the effort to try and rid themselves of meddling, petty tyrants like yourselves.

The Mendacious Yankee Culture

Last year about this time there was a great fuss over Obamacare. Our current Marxist-in-Chief was working mightily to ram it through Congress and the socialists in that august body lusted after its passage also. Then came the August vacation and congress people went back to their home states for the usual round of town meetings, supposedly to hear what their constituents wanted them to do.

The vast majority of their constituents wanted them to vote against Obamacare and they made their wishes very plain at town meetings all across the country. Not even the tooth fairy could have mistaken the wishes of the folks back home—they didn’t want Obamacare and that was that. Guess what? These same people all went back to Sodom on the Potomac and voted for it anyway. People were shocked. They just couldn’t believe their elected representatives would stiff them that way.

Folks, you need to learn a lesson from this. Those people in Washington don’t give a hoot for what you want. They are going to do what they (and their puppet masters) want. Your desires will be the very first thing ignored. You pay the fat salaries of those people in Washington but they do not represent you in any way, shape or form. They have a socialist agenda to enact and that is their first and only priority. They couldn’t care less what you and I want. Those people are prime examples of the mendacious Yankee/Marxist culture that has taken over the federal government and this kind of thing has been going on for over 150 years now. It’s not new—it’s just that it has never been so blatant before. Get used to it—it’s going to get worse.

The mendacity of Yankee culture (and I’m not talking about all Northern folks here) was obvious to some as early as 1860.

In his excellent book Blood Money: The Civil War and The Federal Reserve (Pelican Publishing Co, 2006), author John Remington Graham has made some very astute observations which most people in the Southern Heritage Movement probably never think about. I know I didn’t. He maintains that the War of Northern Aggression was promoted and then financed by the big banking houses on Wall Street because they knew it would be a big money maker for them. As far as the lives lost and ruined, both North and South, who cared? There was a profit to be made and everybody knows you gotta crack some eggs if you want to make an omelet. He noted, on page 49, that: “A new regime of taxation, including not only higher tariffs but income taxes, was enacted to sustain this enterprise profitable to the large banking houses…The institutions included central reserve banks on Wall Street, which insured and nourished the whole system of institutions growing up from financing the American Civil War. The cunning sophistication that planned, incited, and financed the brutal conquest of the Southern states was utterly beyond the comprehension of most people then living in the region. ” He observed the quiet, agrarian, traditional lifestyle of the average Southerner, writing that most Southern folks were “sober, plain and religious, even tending toward the mystical.” Their view of life was a simple one of chivalry and honor and that was how they planned to fight this war, with chivalry and honor, however, Mr. Graham noted “But such a war was not what had been engineered by high finance, and the Southern people were wholly unprepared to resist the juggernaut which has been ruthlessly bought to march against them.”

Southern folks, from Jefferson Davis on down, never really grasped the true mendacity of the Yankee culture, how false and devious it was. Southern delegations sent to Washington were always the victims of one-upsmanship because they tried to deal honestly with the questions at hand, while Lincoln and Seward and the rest had no intention of doing such. The Southerners could not grasp the idea of how honorable men could do what these Yankees did. They failed to comprehend the truth that they were not dealing with honorable men. By the time they learned this it was too late. There was truly a difference between Southern culture and Yankee (not all Northern) culture and for the most part, the Southerners never became “wise as serpents” while in the North, the Yankees had taught the serpents.

John B. Jones, author of A Rebel War Clerk’s Diary was a Southerner who had lived in the North and had observed the Yankee culture firsthand while there. Before the War started he fled back south and in conversation with Governor Wise of Virginia, he said:

The greatest statesmen of the South have no conception of the real purposes of the men now in power in the United States. They cannot be made to believe that the Government at Washington are going to wage war immediately.” The governor didn’t even believe him when he told him that Lincoln had called out 70,000 men. Jones continued: “Nevertheless, when I told him these 70,000 were designed to be merely the videttes and outposts of an army of 700,000, he was quite incredulous. He had not witnessed the Wide-Awake gatherings the preceding fall as I had done, and listened to the pledges they made to subjugate the South, free the Negroes and hang Gov. Wise. I next told him they would blockade our ports and endeavor to cut off our supplies…He said it would be contrary to the law of nations, as had been decided in the Courts of Admiralty and moreover would be a violation of the Constitution…Laws and courts and constitutions would not be impediments in the way of Yankees resolved upon our subjugation. Presuming upon their superior numbers, and under the pretext of saving the Union and annihilating slavery, they would invade us like the army-worm…The real object was to enjoy our soil and climate by means of confiscation.

Jones said of the Governor “He had no idea that the Yankees would dare to enter upon such enterprises in the face of an enlightened world. But I know them better.”  If we have studied history at all, we know what happened. The Yankees did indeed do all those uncivilized things that Southerners felt they would never do because the Southerners themselves would not have done them. And so, in the main, they misunderstood their enemy. They were honorable and they expected the Yankees would be also. They weren’t.

They won the war and pillaged the South with “reconstruction” and when they found out how well that worked they began incrementally to “reconstruct” the rest of the country. They’re still doing it. Cultural Marxism is a major part of it, as is political correctness. And still people don’t get it! They think because they oppose what the feds do the feds will back down. Don’t bet the farm on that anymore. In some instances they may appear to back down, temporarily, but all the while they are looking for a convenient back door through which to promote their socialism without you being fully aware of it.

Comrade Obama and the socialist thugs in Congress plan on giving us some brand of Marxism no matter how many of us don’t want it. We’d better start to realize where those people in Washington are really at and we’d better start working through our states to begin to nullify what they are trying to do to us because they are not about to quit just because we don’t like it. More people and state governments need to begin to think nullification and they need to do it now.

Afterwards and for many, I sincerely hope, you will come to realize how YOUR Constitutional Republic was literally stolen from you by Washington.
 
Read it, pause and absorb its message, and understand what was truly lost in 1865 when our Confederate Military was ultimately defeated by an invasionary force 4 times its size.  Many of us have been trying desperately to educate one and all as to what has been going on ever since.
 
Learn what resulted from Reconstruction and what Reconstruction's DESIRED INTENT was really all about.  Understand what the eventual consequences of Reconstruction were and the impact it had upon this entire Nation, and not just the South as it has been made out to be within the Federal school system.
 
Perhaps, and I do hope and pray, that y'all will comprehend what we Confederates are trying to do -RESTORE WHAT WAS ILLEGALLY TAKEN FROM US AS OPPOSED TO WHAT SOME ARE CALLING FOR- RE-ESTABLISHING A NEW SOUTH---- an IMPOSSIBILITY under Federal Law resulting from their Reconstruction laws & policies following 1865.
 
You can't make Legal that which the victor has declared Illegal by virtue of their NEW LAWS, but you can force the victor to deal with those Laws & Conscripts that existed before their illegal invasion, as those Laws represented those of the once Constitutional Republic that we all shared long ago.  Those Laws of old are 'still on the books'.
 
In this manner, we can cut to the chase by going 'Back to the Future' and raising the many essential & key questions that have never been asked!
 
Perhaps you can now understand the significance & importance regarding President Davis' refusal to surrender the Confederate Government.  Had he done so, it would have been over for all of us....but he left the door open!
 
Therein lays the Big Picture the Federals have denied, hidden & taken from YOU.
 
Current events and Earlier Ones, ever since 1865, are but the extension of their chicanery and corruption as it relates to this nations political, economic and social profiles.  All this & MORE has either been compromised, altered, changed or prostituted by these Federals while 'Transforming' us from the Constitutional Republic we once were, into their demonic Socialist Democracy that we are today and should have never been.

Any serious student of the causes of the War Between the States is left with many unanswered questions. If the war was truly fought over the secession of States from the voluntary union, who or what caused that secession to take place, and who resisted compromise to hold the union together?  As suggested below, why did the North sign on to the Compromise of 1850 when it had no intentions of abiding by it?
 
If the African slavery they once had among them in the North (and their New England slave trade) was so evil, what prevented Northern agitators and their financiers from finding a peaceful and effective solution to slavery in the South? If slavery’s demise was desired by the philanthropic British and New England abolitionists, why didn’t they press peaceful solutions as they did for themselves? Why was fratricidal war and the loss of a million lives necessary?

“In the North, sincere if fanatical abolitionists and opportunists alike used the slavery issue for political advancement. In the South, the voices…grew more passionate in their crusades for independence. Northern agitators gave them the ammunition. When the Southern States had adopted the Compromise of 1850, the Georgia legislature summarized the attitude of them all. Serving notice that the preservation of the Union depended on the Northern States’ faithfully abiding by the terms of the Compromise, the Georgia delegates stressed its particular application to the federal laws regarding fugitive slaves.
 
This was a very real issue to the planters, and nothing so impressed the individual Southerner with Northern hostility as the protection given runaways in the North and the actual attacks on federal officials trying to enforce the laws on stolen property. On this last point, the Georgians stated, “It is the deliberate opinion of this convention that upon the faithful execution of the fugitive-slave bill depends the preservation of our much-loved Union.”
 
Yet in the North, many people continued to repudiate and defy the fugitive slave laws, which constituted about the only thing the South got out of the Compromise. To the Southerners trying to promote secession, this breach of faith served to illustrate the little regard in which the North held Union. Then Northern literature erupted into what amounted to an anti-Southern propaganda mill. In 1851 appeared Uncle Tom’s Cabin, that inflammable work of the imagination, to start the decade in a spirit of recriminations. With the pamphlets and literature which took up where Mrs. Stowe left off, newspapers joined in the denunciations of their fellow Americans. To support the fictional pictures of the benighted Southerners, the New York Tribune stated flatly that plantations were “little else than Negro harems,” and that, of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Tyler (who was still living) “hardly one has failed to leave his mulatto children.”
 
Even Virginia, which produced these Presidents, had been brought to ruin by “pride and folly and…[Negro] concubinage…” while south Carolina, with its “chivalry-ridden inhabitants,” like the other States, “is a full thousand years behind the North in civilization.” Emerson and Longfellow, Lowell and Whittier, the new literary pillars of that civilization, conjured up pictures of the vileness of their Southern neighbors.”

I am a child of the reconstructionist South. Though I was not heavily invested towards hating my Southern heritage, I was, nevertheless, encouraged to hide who I was. Thus, if when someone new came to my hometown of Pahokee Fla., along the SE coast of Lake Okeechobee, and by way of meeting me, thusly remarked, "You don't sound like you are from there", I most likely replied something in the affirmative. So I hated who I was (a Southerner), and where I was from (the South), without really knowing why.
 
It was with great pride I received the remark that I did not sound like I was from there. Conversely, I would have received with great shame the comment "I sounded like I WAS from there".
 
That was then, this is now. I was a young, ignorant teen then, I am a grown, mature man now. Now, I embrace and proclaim my Southern heritage with MUCH justifiable pride. I champion the cause of the South as the cause of us all.  I Am The South!!  It would do well for us all to so proclaim. I AM THE SOUTH!!!

Secession and Readmission

In the following mid-1864 letter to Charles Sumner, General Gantt of Arkansas questions the revolutionary logic of the radical Republicans in Congress which claimed sovereign States had become mere territories after unsuccessfully seeking political independence.  Radicals like Sumner had forgotten that the States created the limited government, and the latter had absolutely no authority to question a solemn decision of a State’s electorate.

FIFTH-AVENUE HOTEL, June 1, 1864.

 
Hon. Chas. Sumner:
 
SIR: But for your resolution and action in reference to Arkansas politics, I feel sure that I should not have appeared before the public again. The subject which calls forth this letter being entirely of a public character, induces me to address you through the columns of the New-York TIMES.
 
Upon the application of the State of Arkansas to resume her relations -- temporarily disturbed -- with the National Government, by sending her constitutionally-chosen representatives for that purpose, you have seen fit to introduce the following resolution, to wit:
 
Resolved, That a State pretending to secede from the Union, and battling against the National Government to maintain their position, must be regarded as a rebel State, subject to military occupation, and without representation on this floor, until it has been readmitted by a vote of both Houses of Congress; and the Senate will decline to entertain any application from any such rebel State until after such a vote of both Houses.
 
From this I infer that you intend to oppose our peace offering, and to break up, if possible, our loyal State organization, effected as it has been at immense personal hazard, and wonderful exertions and determination upon the part of our loyal people.
 
When you say that a "State pretending to secede" must be "readmitted" by a vote of both Houses of Congress, what are we to understand you to mean? Do you mean that the State really did secede? That is, that it got out of the "compact?" If that be so does it not occur to you that it went out as a State and became a separate sovereignty? If this be so, "readmission," it strikes me, is a legal impossibility. The Sovereign Government of Arkansas should apply for "annexation" and not "readmission." But do you mean that it only pretended it was out, while in point of fact it was in the Union? Then how could you "readmit" that which never was out? It would place the Government in the awkward attitude, it seems to me, of fighting against the people of a State because they "pretended to secede," and yet had not, and at the same time declaring that they did go out and must be "readmitted."
 
But do you mean that the secession ordinances passed by certain legislatures and conventions reduced the States in which the same were passed to Territories? If so, how? If the ordinances referred to put the States out, why they went out as States. It won't do to say they had just enough sovereignty to scramble out of the Government, and that then they rumbled into Territories. The sovereignty reserved that could take them out, could hold them up as States. As such, they could form compacts with other Governments, or new combinations of their own. They could not possibly work their way out of the Government, and being out, fall back to the Government as a part of its territory -- no more than they could merge into the Russian possessions. A doctrine so dangerous might destroy the Government in a month. Secession ordinances passed by twenty States, reducing them to Territories, would stop the wheels of Government.
 
But you may intend this as a punishment because our State "pretended to secede." If so, we are already punished enough. But why discriminate? Missouri pretended to secede, and so did Kentucky. There was no question raised over them. And Mr. BOULINEY, of Louisiana, remained in the Congress of the United States more than one year after Louisiana pretended to secede.
 
But, then, your opposition may arise from want of regularity in the reorganization. That it was without precedent I admit. That the people, groaning under anarchy, oppression and despair, wrought out a government from the wreck around them, with no beaten path to follow, is true.”

Ladies' Memorial Associations

In a recent issue of the SHNV there was an announcement about a book, Burying the Dead but Not the Past: Ladies' Memorial Associations and the Lost Cause, by Caroline Janney.
 
The book explores the role of women in this noble cause from 1865 to 1915.  Someone now needs to write a "sequel" to this and document all the ladies' memorial associations from 1915 to 2010.  How many are still in existence?  I know of two which are still alive and well, one in Montgomery, Alabama (Ladies' Memorial Association of Montgomery) and one in Arkansas (Southern Memorial Association of Washington County). 
 
The one with which I am most familiar is the Southern Memorial Association of which I am currently the president.  The Southern Memorial Association of Washington County was begun in 1872 and has had a continuous membership since then.  According to the Arkansas History Commission, the Southern Memorial Association of Washington County is the oldest known, continuous association formed by women in the state of Arkansas.
 
Maybe readers of this newsletter know of other ladies' memorial associations founded back in the 1800s and still in existence?  If so, please send me the contact information as I would like to start compiling a list.  evergreen@pgtc.com

These knuckleheads who are supposedly in the business in improving the economy and bringing loot to their community are in fact a bunch of rootless bureaucrats gaily caving in to political vandalism and extortion. It's not actually politics or even a conflict, but theater (you can't rape the willing). The NAACP and CoC are always in bed together so when the former says jump and the latter says how high, it's pillow talk. The masses get the message of the immorality play before them and proceed to ape and regurgitate the sick "values" thus imprinted on them. Parents know that if they speak up against the gagging BS of it all, their kids may say something they shouldn't in school and somebody get sent for psychological evaluation.
 
None of this would be happening if it weren't for freaks from the BIzarro anti-world running the media bully pulpit, and Bizarro lawyers pushing against normalcy and sanity from the other direction. That's how every last bit of political correctness gets enforced and ingrained -- these things don't just happen. Anybody half paying attention will know who I'm really referring to.
 
Will all red-blooded Southern patriots please make a permanent note that Chambers of Commerce are actually Charnel Houses of Communism? This is equal parts stupid and evil. The article bleats that the CoC opted to stiff the opportunity "for fear an NAACP boycott on South Carolina will hurt its chances at attracting the event"!??!? I thought President Russiavelt proclaimed that we are supposed to enjoy "freedom from fear" in this country? The truth is that they simply love the NAACP, hate the South, and the fear is a fig-leaf for the red-hot passion of institutional adultery.
 
A C T I O N   N E E D E D !  CALL the Myrtle Beach Area CoC at 843-626-7444 and ask why they simply caved without at least giving it a try. Tell them you're disgusted and will never vacation in MB as long as it's in the grip of PC -- or whatever you feel like saying. An argument in support of secession by President James Buchanan's attorney general, Judge Jeremiah Black, is found in a book entitled A DEFENSE OF THE SOUTH.  Here is that argument:
 
Judge Black on secession and the Constitution

 
The leading men of the South were so devoted to the Union and so reluctant to withdraw from it that, even after the triumph of the distinctly sectional party at the polls and the election of a President avowedly hostile to Southern institutions and interests, they would not have seceded if they could have obtained any satisfactory assurance that the Constitution would continue to be recognized as the law of the land and that the government would continue to be administered in accordance with its plain provisions. This assurance they vainly tried to get. The testimony of Judge Black, of Pennsylvania, given in an open letter to the Hon. Charles Francis Adams, which was published in the Galaxy for January 1874, not only confirms this statement, but throws a flood of light on the whole situation.
 
After stating the general belief at Washington that Mr. Seward would be “the Wolsey” of the new administration, with 'Law in his voice and honor in his hand,' while others would be subordinate and the President himself little more than a figurehead," Judge Black said: "When the troubles were at their worst, certain Southern gentlemen, through Judge Campbell, of the Supreme Court, requested me to meet Mr. Seward and see if he would not give them some ground on which they could stand with safety inside of the Union. I consented, and we met at the State Department. . . . Many propositions were discussed and rejected as being either impracticable or likely to prove useless before I told him what I felt perfectly sure would stop all controversy at once and forever. I proposed that he should simply pledge himself and the incoming administration to govern according to the Constitution, and upon every disputed point of constitutional law to accept that exposition of it which had been or might be given by the judicial authorities. He started at this, became excited, and violently declared he would do no such thing. 'That,' said he, 'is treason; that would make me agree to the Dred Scott case.'
 
In vain I told him that he was not required to admit the correctness of any particular case, but merely to submit to it [the Constitution] as the decision of the highest tribunal, from which there could be no appeal except to the sword. . . . I had never before heard that treason was obedience to the Constitution as construed by the courts; but this prepared me to learn, as I did some time afterwards, that the correlative virtue of loyalty consisted in trampling the laws under foot.
 
Thus the recognized leader of the Republican party, who was expected to dictate the policy of the incoming administration, emphatically refused to give the Southern leaders that assurance of safety within the Union which would have settled all the trouble, and declared that it would be treason to pledge himself and his party to govern according to the Constitution as it had been or might be expounded by the highest judicial tribunal in the country.
 
When the reins of government were placed in the hands of men who thus emphatically refused to pledge themselves to govern according to the Constitution as construed by the judiciary; when the administration of the country's affairs was given to a party that was organized on a distinctly sectional basis and, in the words of a Northern historian, "Constitution and Union and all public and personal rights and privileges dependent upon them, in the North as well as in the South, stood in immediate and imminent danger of utter overthrow," Southern statesmen felt that, if they would preserve the government inherited from their fathers and hand it down as a heritage to their children, they must withdraw from the Union and establish a Confederacy of their own.
